Its scientific name, Nymphaea, is derived from the Greek word nymph — no wonder it is also known as the Goddess of Water. Despite growing in muddy ponds, water lilies remain untainted by the mud as they emerge from the water. As the bloom comes to an end, they will slowly sink back into the water, leaving behind seed pods that fall into the soil below, patiently awaiting their next bloom. Such unique characteristics and lifecycle have made the water lily a symbol of purity, rebirth, and new beginnings.
